Confederate monuments were mostly raised decades after the Civil War, many during the Jim Crow era. They present the Confederacy through the Lost Cause story rather than through the historical record of slavery in the United States. These monuments and flags honor a myth. The myth helps people forget the larger context and ugliness of slavery rather than remember it. As the documentary maker Ken Burns has put it, they represent stories, not facts. They are myths I do not think we should cherish.
