Confederate monuments were mostly raised decades after the Civil War, many during the Jim Crow era, and they present the Confederacy through the Lost Cause narrative rather than through the historical record of slavery in the United States. These monuments and flags memorialize a myth, and the myth helps people forget the larger context and ugliness of slavery rather than remember it. As the documentarian Ken Burns has put it, they represent stories, not facts. Myths we should not cherish.
